New Delhi: On January 22, Arshdeep Singh made history by becoming India’s top wicket-taker in T20I cricket. Previously, Yuzvendra Chahal held the record with 96 wickets, but Arshdeep surpassed this by taking two wickets against England at Eden Gardens. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah rank third, fourth, and fifth on the list, respectively.
The young player expressed his apologies to Chahal after setting a new record. In a video shared by the BCCI, Arshdeep humorously clasped his ears in a gesture of remorse. Additionally, the Indian team performed exceptionally well with the ball in the first T20I against England. Varun Chakravarthy took three wickets, while both Arshdeep and Pandya secured two wickets each, as England ended their first innings with a total of 132 runs.
The Indian opening batsmen began the second innings with great energy, with Sanju Samson laying the groundwork for Abhishek Sharma, who ultimately shone in the match. Sharma scored an impressive 79 runs from just 34 balls, leading the team to victory in only 12.5 overs. However, there are ongoing concerns regarding the form of captain Suryakumar Yadav, despite the team’s success.
Varun was named Player of the Match due to his outstanding bowling performance during the middle overs. Following the match, Arshdeep emphasized the significance of effective bowling in that phase and praised the spinner for his excellent performance since rejoining the national team. Varun expressed his happiness about receiving the award, noting that it provides him with a sense of assurance.
“Varun bowled really well. In T20Is, it’s crucial to pick wickets in the middle overs because if the bowling team fails to pick wickets at that time, the opponent accelerates in the death and it’s difficult to bowl at that time. Since Varun joined, he has picked plenty of wickets in the middle overs and set the platform for us in the death. I hope he keeps up with the momentum,” Arshdeep said in the video released by BCCI.
“Feels good, this is my first player of the match for the country and definitely it feels great because it gives me a sense of certainty,” Varun added in the same video.
