Team India will take on Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday. Both teams are getting back to the ODI arena after a long time and will be hoping to build a match-winning squad in the build up to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Skipper Rohit Sharma is back in charge of the ODI side after walking away from the T20 format and he will be joined by Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav in the squad – members who were not part of the three-match T20I series which India won 3-0.
KL Rahul looks set to don the wicketkeeping gloves for the 1st ODI against Sri Lanka ahead of Rishabh Pant, who had an inconsistent run in the T20I matches so far. “It’s a tough call (wicketkeeper-batter between Rahul and Pant) to make. Both are quality players, and you know the abilities of both the players. They are match-winners in their own way. They have won a lot of games for us in the past,” Rohit Sharma said about the choice between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma will be playing in his first ODI match after the heartbreaking 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia. The Indian skipper got a long break after leading Team India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title.
“I had a good time off from cricket. It was a great feeling to come back home after winning the World Cup…what we experienced in Delhi and Mumbai. But yeah, now we have to move on, cricket moves on,” said Rohit on the eve of the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
Hosts Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have to go into the first ODI with two inexperienced seamers in Asitha Fernando and Mohamed Shiraz or Eshan Malinga as first-choice pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka are ruled out with injury. Skipper Charith Asalanka may look to pick young left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage over Chamika Karunaratne looking at the conditions in Colombo.
