New Delhi: Looking at India’s bowl-out innings, New Zealand’s fast bowling trio of Tim Southee, Matt Henry and William O’Rourke produced a super show with the ball on Thursday (October 27) and helped the Black Caps bowl India out for 46 runs in the first innings of the ongoing first Test in Bengaluru.

On the other hand, Tim Southee started the proceedings by dismissing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, Matt Henry picked up five wickets and four Indian batters were sent back into the pavilion as O’Rourke struck with his phenomenal bowling performance.

It is worth mentioning that when New Zealand stunned India on Day 2 of the first Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, a 10-year-old tweet of England’s star bowler Jofra Archer went viral on the internet. Jofra Archer, who has played in all three formats of the game for England, the tweet was tweeted by him on November 21, 2014.

The total of 46 became India’s lowest-ever total in Tests at home and third overall in the five-day Test matches.

India’s wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant top-scored for the hosts by making 20 runs from 49 balls, whereas Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed 13 runs. No other batter apart from the duo was able to score runs in double digits and as many as five returned back to the pavilion on 0.

Talking about the reasons behind this, India lost as many as six batters for 34 runs in the first session of the second day’s play after Rohit opted to bat first in the second Test, the first day of which was washed out due to rain.

Marking up the best performer who had his hands on the Indian side was 23-year-old O’Rourke, who is playing his fifth Test for the Black Caps and first against India, removed Virat Kohli for 0 runs from nine balls after he came out to bat at No. 3 for the first time in Tests since August 2016. Shubman Gill, who is India’s preferred No. 3 batter in Tests, is not playing in Bengaluru due to fitness-related issues. In his place, Sarfaraz Khan was added to the playing XI, but he also failed to open his account in the first Test since March 2024.

He was caught by Devon Conway off Matt Henry’s bowling. Apart from Kohli and Sarfaraz, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin also failed to open their accounts.
