Chasing a near-impossible target of 340, India struggled as both skipper Rohit Sharma (9 off 40 balls) and Virat Kohli (5) succumbed to technical flaws and mental pressure. India lost seven wickets for just 34 runs in 20.4 overs, being bowled out for 155 in 79.1 overs.
Nathan Lyon (2/37 in 20.1 overs) exploited the variable bounce, while Mitchell Starc (1/25 in 16 overs) claimed the vital wicket of Kohli. Kohli’s struggles outside the off-stump were again evident, as his uncontrollable urge to play the cover drive led to his dismissal at first slip after Starc angled one across.
The shoulder barge incident with rookie Aussie opener Sam Konstas became a hot topic throughout the match. Kohli was fined 20% of his match fee and received a demerit point for the action. Earlier, he was booed as he walked back to the dressing room following his first-innings dismissal, which led to a brief confrontation with the crowd. With a 184-run loss at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, India’s chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final have dimmed significantly. To stay in contention, India must win the final Test in Sydney and hope that Australia fails to win any match in their upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
