Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s health failed as she put in all efforts to lose weight ahead of her Paris Olympics 2024 final bout on Wednesday.
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat fainted on Wednesday (August 7) and had to be admitted to Paris Olympics 2024 Athletes Village Polyclinic for treatment of dehydration. Vinesh was heartbreakingly disqualified after being found 100gms overweight in the second weigh-in on Wednesday ahead of her women’s wrestling 50kg gold medal match.

Vinesh had stayed up all night, working out on treadmill, skipping and trying to pull in all stops to reduce her weight down to the 50kg limit before her final. But she ultimately failed in this regard.
The 29-year-old is now getting treatment for dehydration in the Athletes Village polyclinic after fainting due to lack of food, water and exhaustion. However, these cannot be grounds for ensuring a silver medal for Vinesh because the UWW body rules clearly state that a wrestler will be disqualified if he/she misses or fails any of the two weigh-ins.
According to sources, PM Narendra Modi spoke to IOA President PT Usha and asked her to explore every available avenue that might help Vinesh’s case. “PM spoke to IOA President PT Usha and sought first hand information from PT Usha on the issue and the options India has in the wake of Vinesh’s setback,” a source said.
“He asked her to explore the full range of options to help Vinesh’s case. He also urged PT Usha to file a strong protest regarding her disqualification if that helps Vinesh,” he added.
